Good morning everyone — I hope you are doing great :)
Today, we are going bust four of the most common myths when it comes to dining at Disney with food allergies. This is essential information especially for our newer Disney families.
In other Disney dining news, one of the most prestigious restaurants on property has just been awarded it’s third consecutive Michelin star.
Can you guess which restaurant it is? Make sure you read until the end to find out!
Okay let’s do it 👇
Food Allergy Tip
Four of the most common Disney food allergy myths, explained

Myth #1: "Disney Eliminates All Allergy Risk"
Disney accommodates food allergies like no other. We know this. That is why you are reading the Disney Food Allergy Group email newsletter on a Tuesday morning. Disney is the gold standard, there is no argument.
WITH THAT SAID… cast members are still human, and humans make mistakes. This is one of the most critical pieces of information we constantly post about.
It is SO easy to let your guard down on property, but unless you are in the kitchen cooking the meal yourself, there is always going to be some risk. Even at Disney, mistakes can happen.
I know you know this, but this is just your friendly reminder to stay vigilant and to continue to advocate for yourself.
Myth #2: “Quick service is not as safe as sit down dining”
To set the record straight, quick service dining is absolutely just as safe as sit down dining, as long as you follow the right steps. Let’s talk about it quickly.
Table service definitely offers a more relaxing and slow paced environment. But quick service locations (as long as they are Disney owned) will follow all of the same, very strict safety protocols. This includes using dedicated allergy-prep areas, separate fryers, dedicated cooking utensils, and a rigorous chain of command to ensure your meal is handled with extra care. The whole shebang.
We always recommend skipping the mobile ordering, even though that’s what Disney is pushing these days. When ordering with food allergies, you should always ask to speak with a chef or special diets trained cast member.
This way, you will be able to review full ingredient lists yourself from the “purple binder” and discuss all other aspects of your meal like cross contamination concerns and even special allergen friendly substitute options!
Lastly, your food should arrive with some sort of visual marker whether it be an allergy pick or a specific sticker in order to verify your meal went through all the safety checks!
Myth #3: “Food allergy menus will show you all the options”
Food allergy menus are great at telling you what allergens are in each menu item, but the problem is they take things way too literally.
I always like to give the classic cheeseburger example when explaining this: A cheeseburger on a food allergy menu will be listed as “not safe for dairy allergies”. While that is technically correct, if you speak with a chef it will be a completely different story.
A Disney chef is 100% going to be able to prepare someone with a dairy allergy that same exact burger either with no cheese, or with a dairy free alternative (depending on location and availability). But if you just went by the allergy menu, it would not be listed as an option.
A Disney chef is also going to be the most up to date on ingredient or process changes. Things change all of the time, you will get the most accurate information by speaking with a chef.
There are also known errors on some of the Disney food allergy menus. A classic example are the milkshakes from Sci-Fi Dine In Theater. In my opinion, these are one of the best dairy free desserts on property, but not according to their food allergy menu. If you speak with a chef they will offer you a choice of vanilla, chocolate, or Oreo flavor, all 100% dairy free and 100% delicious.
Myth #4: “Buffets are off limits”
I can confidently say that some of my best Disney dining memories have come from buffet style restaurants.
In real life (off property), buffets are almost never an option for those of us with food allergies. There is just too much cross contamination risk when eating from the line.
But as you all know by now, Disney goes the extra mile to accommodate food allergies in any way that they can. Speaking with a chef is especially important at buffet style restaurants.
After having a conversation with you about your allergies, the chef can then walk you around the buffet to show you what is safe and what to avoid. They will mark down everything you say you want, and they will bring the food out from the back.
As I said, some of our favorite Disney dining memories have come from buffet style restaurants. Walking around with the chef, getting a personal tour of all the options available to you, and then getting 3-4 plates of food brought out from the kitchen is something everyone should experience.
