If you've been following us for a while, you've probably seen us cover this topic before—but it's simply too important not to revisit.

Food allergy menus are great at telling you what allergens are in each menu item, but the truth is they will mislead you…
If you really want to maximize your experience and get those really special Disney meals, you must to speak with a chef when ordering.
The food allergy menus lack creativity. It will base the restrictions off the menu item exactly how it is listed. For example, if a burger comes with cheese, it will not be listed as "safe for dairy allergies". BUT if you speak with a chef, they can easily make you a burger without cheese and completely free of dairy.
There are also known holes in the Disney Food Allergy Menus. The Sci-Fi Drive In Theater is known to have amazing allergy friendly milkshakes, they have a dedicated dairy free blender. But on the food allergy menu it does not say it is safe for dairy allergies. Don't let these things turn you off from making a reservation.
This is another example of why you should always speak to a chef. At Disney a lot of times the reality of what you can eat will exceed your expectations, but you have to talk with a chef and they will give you those extra options.
When we post food allergy menus, we always get comments saying things like "Only 2 options for gluten free? I guess I can't eat there."
This is not true. The food allergy menus will mislead you.
As we said earlier they lack creativity. One quick substitution could be an easy fix for you to get that burger, but the food allergy menu won’t tell you that. A Disney Chef will be able to work with you to create a fantastic meal.
Without a doubt the best practice for eating at Disney with food allergies is to speak with a chef. Don't feel bad about asking, this is what they are there for. Even if the wait staff tells you they can handle your allergy, you must insist on speaking with a chef.
At the end of the day Disney is the gold standard for food allergys but you must remain an advocate for yourself at all times.
Speak up if something isn't right, speak with a chef about options, and you are set up to have a great Disney dining experience.

Disney has officially released many of the biggest holiday event dates for the 2026 season, making it the perfect time to start planning if you're hoping to visit during the holidays.
