Good morning everyone — I hope you’re having a great week! 💙

This week, we’re going back to the basics with five essential tips for families traveling to Disney with food allergies. Then, we’ll take a look at the dates and festive details for this year’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom.

Let’s get into it. 👇

Food Allergy Tips

Our top 5 tips for dining at Disney with food allergies

Planning a Disney trip with food allergies can involve a LOT of research. You’re looking through menus, saving photos of meals from our Facebook group, and trying to figure out where everyone in your family will be able to eat.

All of that can be helpful. But once you get to Disney, some of the most important things come down to how you communicate, who you speak with, and being ready to adjust your plans.

Whether you’re getting ready for your first trip or have been visiting for years, these are five tips we always come back to.

1. Use the words “food allergies.”

Our first tip starts at square one: say the words “food allergies” early and often.

When a Cast Member knows that you have food allergies, it lets them know to use Disney’s allergy-request process. That is why it’s important to clearly explain that your request is related to an allergy, rather than simply asking to leave an ingredient out of your meal.

Tell them you have food allergies, name your allergens, and repeat that information as needed throughout the ordering process.

2. Always ask to speak with a chef.

Once you tell a Cast Member that you have food allergies, you may be given an allergy-friendly menu. These menus can be useful for getting an idea of what you might want to order, but we always recommend asking to speak directly with a chef.

No one knows the kitchen, the preparation processes, the current ingredients, and the available substitutions better than the chef. This is your opportunity to talk through all your allergens and ask any questions you have about ingredients, preparation, or cross-contact.

Depending on the location, a Special Diets-trained Cast Member may help you with this conversation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take the time you need.

3. Keep your expectations flexible.

You’re getting ready for your trip, scrolling through the Disney Food Allergy Group on Facebook, and seeing all the amazing meals other families are enjoying. It can make everything look so easy!

The truth is, things change all the time. Menus change, ingredients change, and preparation processes change. Something you saw another guest enjoy online may not be an option for your allergies when you arrive. It is important to verify all information on site at the time of ordering.

Just be prepared for this. Have backup plans, but keep the right mindset as well. It’s okay to be disappointed if a meal you were excited about doesn’t work out, we have all been there. But one meal does not have to make or break your vacation, and when you are at Disney, there is surely another great option right around the corner!

4. Stick with Disney-owned restaurants.

As many of you know, not every restaurant on Disney property is owned and operated by Disney. Especially at Disney Springs, many restaurants are operated by third parties.

If you want to keep things simple, we recommend starting with Disney-owned and operated restaurants. All Disney owned restaurants will follow the same gold standard protocol that we have come to know, love, and trust.

We have had good experiences at third-party restaurants, too. But you should ask about their own allergy procedures rather than assume they follow the same process as Disney.

Regardless of who operates the restaurant, clearly communicating your allergies is always important.

5. Stay vigilant.

When you’re on Disney property, it is SO easy to let your guard down. After good experiences with chefs and Cast Members, you can start to feel fully comfortable handing everything over to them.

But it’s important to stay involved. Even experienced, well-trained staff are still human, and mistakes can happen.

Keep communicating your allergies, ask questions if something doesn’t seem right, and confirm your meal when it arrives. Disney specifically asks guests to verify their allergy request with the Cast Member delivering the food, even when the meal has an allergy marker.

Enjoy the experience, but always stay on the lookout. 💙
